Revisiting Dallas History: Deep Ellum Before the Highways

As part of our office’s Second Nature Initiative, we’re refocusing on our neighborhood of Deep Ellum to discover potential future opportunities to preserve the neighborhood’s unique character and provide a toolbox of potential opportunities for future development in the area. As part of that study, I was challenged with investigating the historical context of the area, tasked with responding to questions on the neighborhood’s original street layout, the role that Deep Ellum (or Deep Elm as it was originally called) played in the overall context of the city, and looking at dramatic changes to the built fabric of the place that have occurred throughout its history.

Telling Stories through Design: A review of the 2015 TSA Convention in Dallas

Studio Outside and more than 3,000 other design professionals attended this year’s Texas Society of Architects 76th Annual Convention and Design Expo at Dallas’ Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center this month focusing on one theme: stories.

With more than 90 continuing education sessions, more than 30 architectural tours, 300 booths and two keynote speakers, the event offered architects and architecture professionals a chance to regenerate and find inspiration in three high-energy days focused on stories that build environments, said Tod Stehling, Expo and Development Director at the Texas Society of Architects
